The land between river Varuna and river Assi came to be called in the Religious Mapping as the sacred land of Varanasi. In other texts, it became Anadvana: The land of ultimate Bliss and Nirvana and still in others Kashi, the city of light.
The river Ganga, which flows in this age-old city has never changed its course. For certain miles, it runs backward north towards its mouth Uttarvahini. The area has come to be called the Moksha-Sthan or the land of Nirvana.
The idea of Nirvana or escape from the cycle of death and life acquires several paths encased in the idea of the city. It could be through the path of knowledge and hence the City has evolved with the passage of time one that is associated with the heritage of Knowledge. The path could be that of performing arts, leisure, and cuisine – hence the ancient urban town has nurtured one of the best traditions of Intangible heritage which includes mythological plays, crafts, and untold masters of music, dance, literature, and poetry.
The road to Nirvana could be in the idea of accumulating arth or monetary gains, the city of Varanasi situated along the grand Ganges acquired its seminal identity as a city of economic power, its rich alluvial plain ensured thriving agricultural produce and trade all through ancient times, such that the space of Varanasi also emerged as a space where rulers vied for power and merchants from various parts of the Subcontinent made their way here living their imprints in the cultural heritage of the city.
The ultimate path to Nirvana and the legitimacy of all human actions define the religious and ritualistic fervor that draws all people of various classes and regions such that it is here that one comprehends that religion is the largest self-organized business of India.
Varanasi became not only home to a variety sect linked with Hinduism, but also with Jainism, Buddhism, and Islam. One of the holiest city of the Hindus it gained symbolic importance through lifetime events for Jains since the 23rd Tirthankara or Spiritual leaders Parashvnath was born here, as much as Buddha walked in silence after he gained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and reached Varanasi ensuring economic backing for his mission to provide an alternate philosophy of life. The Buddha then gave his first sermon in the deer park in the outskirts of Varanasi.
The symbolism of Varanasi thus became Kashi, the city of lights, the path to seek subjective illumination, directions.
Varanasi is the microcosm of everything that is India, it evidently showcases the generative idea of contradiction as much as it is naked in the way humans justify their karma their happiness and sorrow.
